About DSU

What is Dog Sport University?

DSU is an online learning school designed to provide dog training services to as many owners and dogs as possible.

Does DSU only offer courses about dog sports? I am interested in training my dog to be better behaved.

No! We understand to be successful in any dog sport, you must have a strong foundation. We therefore offer a variety of courses in our School of Good Manners courses that we urge you to check out.

What training methodology or approaches you use?

Great question! While we do have a variety of instructors teaching our courses from across the country, one thing is consistent: all the courses will use positive reinforcement and reward-based training techniques. The focus is on cultivating an engaged and happy learner (meaning your dog!) with each and every course we offer.

You can learn more about the particular instructor who is teaching a course by clicking on the Meet the Instructor tab for that course. You may also learn about all of our instructors here.

Online dog training...I don't know...does that really work?

We completely understand your hesitation. Afterall, shouldn't dog training be done in person?!

In developing the courses for DSU, our goal was to provide high-quality instruction that not only provided the steps to complete a particular exericse, but would also promote the learner (you) to understand why an exercise was being done, and how adjustments could be made for each individual dog. All the courses offered at DSU are based off in-person group training courses, and we are extremely proud of our incredibly talented instructors who take great pride in being a teacher, first and foremost.

One of the biggest advantages of online dog training is you having access to so many talented instructors, regardless of where you live! Then there is the convenience factor. No longer do you have to try to squeeze a group class into your already hectic schedule. The days of rushing home from work, grabbing the dog, sitting in traffic to dash into class frazzled, stressed and worn out are a thing of the past. With DSU, you can go through the material at your own pace, and when it works best for you. By offering three enrollment options, DSU allows you to decide the type of experience you prefer: an intensive instructor interaction or something more relaxed and low-key. It is entirely up to you.

Online dog training is a wonderful option, and we hope DSU will provide a helpful service to as many dogs and handlers as possible!

What is the refund policy?

There are no refunds once the course has begun. Special consideration will be given due to dog or handler injury or death. Please direct these inquiries to .

Are results guaranteed?

No. As with all dog training services, the results hinge on a multitude of variables. These include the physical and behavioral status of the dog as well as the frequency, consistency and proficiency in which the training is conducted. It would be unethical and improper for DSU to guarantee results for any of our courses.

How can I stay informed of what is being offered?

Great question! There are a couple of different ways you can do this. The easiest is to subscribe to the DSU mailing list. We send out notifications when courses and webinars are offered and available to enroll in. Another option is to follow us on social media. We have a Facebook Page, Facebook Group in addition to posting regularly on Twitter and Instagram. Of course, you are always more than welcome to contact us directly at if you have a question.

Course Details

How long are the courses?

Our courses range from a single topic with several modules, to 2, 4 and 6-week progressive courses. All participants will have access to the course materials and course-specific forum for 1-year. For our progressive courses, Students are urged to follow along week-to-week, whereas Auditors and Watchers are welcome to access the materials and work on the exercises when it works best for their schedule.

How much do the courses cost?

Participants may choose from three enrollment options: Student, Auditor, and Watcher. The cost for the course depends on the enrollment level and the length of the course. The cost is clearly outlined in each course.

Is there a limit to how many courses I can enroll in?

No! You may enroll in as many courses as you wish! We do recommend participants who are interested in enrolling as Students limit themselves to 3 courses per dog. This will help ensure the dog does not get overwhelmed or confused.

What will be covered in a particular course?

Each course will have a Course Outline tab, where you may view the topics that will be covered in that particular course.

How do I register for a course?

It is very easy! Watch the following video from our sister online dog training platform, Scent Work University.

What if I forget my password?

Never fear, we've all been there! To reset your password, simply click on the FORGOT YOUR PASSWORD link within the login screen and follow the prompts. When you can access your account again, click on the YOUR PROFILE link, enter a new password, that you create, and then click UPDATE.

If you do have any technical issues, we are always happy to reset your password on our end. Contact us and we will get things sorted out for you as soon as possible.

How do I access my course?

It is super easy to access and go through your course at DSU! First, you want to login using the username and password you selected. You may then follow the steps outlined in this tutorial video from our sister online dog training platform, Scent Work University.

Can I see what a DSU course looks like?

Absolutely! We have created a test course and forum for you to look through. Click on the COURSE EXAMPLE link in the menu bar above, enroll as you would for a normal course, and feel free to go through the lesson and post to the forum to get your bearings.

How do I go from one module or lesson to next?

Great question! We have designed DSU to be as easy to use as possible. We also understand how busy everyone is. You may not have time to go through all the course materials in one sitting. Therefore, each lesson or module is broken up into its own separate course player. When you reach the end of a module or lesson, you will see a slide that says, "End of Lesson or Module X". You then have the choice to close that course player and click on the image or title for the next module or lesson, or log out to come back to course materials at a different time. Easy, right?!

Which devices may I view my course materials on?

Great question! You can view your device on a desktop computer, a cellphone or a tablet! The DSU website and all the courses are responsive. When viewing the course on your cellphone or tablet, you have the option to use the iSpringPlay free app, which will allow you to download the lesson onto your device so you may view it offline. How convenient is that?!

How do I use the course forum?

Here is a step-by-step video showing how easy it is to access, navigate and use the course forum:

What if I have issues with the forum...who do I contact for help?

You may direct any forum-technology questions to us at and we will work to fix the problem as quickly as we can.

How do I give feedback on a course or webinar I've taken?

We would love to hear from you! You may submit feedback using this form here.

Enrollment and Requirements

What are the differences between the enrollment levels?

Great question! The Student enrollment level is the most intensive, with participants required to complete and submit homework assignments and video submissions and will participate in regular chat sessions with the instructor. Students will also have full-access to the course-specific forum.

The Auditor enrollment level is the perfect intermediary. These participants do not need to submit homework or videos. However, Auditors do have full-access to the course material. While Auditors do not participate in the chat sessions with the instructor, they can receive feedback from other participants as well as the instructor on the course-specific forum.

Watcher enrollment is a perfect choice for handlers who are extremely busy and want to learn on their own and at their own pace. Watchers will have full-access to all the course material and may view the course-specific forum, but are not permitted to post any questions, videos or replies.

Student: I'm shy. Can I submit my homework privately to the instructor?

Yes! When you submit your homework and video submissions on the course forum, you may click a box which will render this post private between yourself and the instructor.

Auditor: I have a course-related question. What should I do?

Wonderful! The best way to have your question answered is to post it to the course forum. Not only will you receive feedback from your instructor, but other course participants will chime in as well. After all, we can all learn from one another. If you prefer for one-on-one feedback with the instructor, you are welcome to upgrade to the Student enrollment option.

Watcher: I have a course-related question. What should I do?

Great! The course forum is your best resource. But if you are looking for questions to be answered by the instructor, we urge you to upgrade your enrollment to the Auditor option.

Certificates and CEUs

Will I receive a Certificate of Completion?

Yes! If you complete the course as a Student, you may submit a Request for Certificate of Completion and we will issue the same to you as soon as possible.

Who receives a Certificate of Attendance?

Great question! Auditors who complete a DSU course are entitled to receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Do Watchers receive a Certificate?

Since the Watcher enrollment option is a self-taught one, where participants cannot post to the course forum or participate in the instructor-led chats, they do not receive a Certificate upon finishing the course.

Webinars

How do I participate in a webinar?

You can see the webinars we offer here. We try to regularly schedule live versions of these webinars, but you may also purchase a recorded version.

Need Additional Help?

May I receive in-person help?

DSU focuses on providing online dog training, however you are always welcome to reach out to the instructors to see if they would be available to offer in-person services. This is crucially important if you were looking for assistance with more serious behavioral issues such as reactivity, aggression or separation anxiety. These issues need to be addressed in-person so that your trainer may effectively develop a training plan and behavior modification program.
